Language Arts Age Appropriate Novels: 5 Finger Rule
If your child reads aloud to you and on any given page, does not know more than 5 words, then the book is at a level too high for them. Some of the kids love reading large novels, but often do not comprehend what they are reading. A novel is not the only piece of literature a child can read. They can read a multitude of material through non-fiction fact books, magazines, online articles as well as fiction books. The main goal is to get them reading and to enjoy what they are reading. Finding a book about a boy who is lonely and finds a dog, and giving that book to a boy who hates reading but loves dogs, might just spark enough interest for him to try the book out. Check out Scholastic for more information about age appropriate new books! The best help you can give your child is to have them read aloud to you.
